Dewey’s Read-a-Thon

I’ve decided to participate in Dewey’s 24 hour read-a-thon this year. I have not taken part before as I normally don’t have very much time but this year I do. I’m very excited to take part and have been spending ages planning my books.
I think I will be able to get a maximum of two books read in this time.

I’m thinking I might read

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

I also have the sequels of these two so if I like them a lot I might just read that instead. I also have a lot of other books to read so might read something completely different.

I will do a wrap up of what I read after the read-a-thon and will try to do updates on instagram and on my blog as well.

Bout of books ~ Day 7 and wrap up

By the end of day 7, I was about 75% through Say You Will. My kobo told me I only had about an hours reading left. I ended up finishing the book Monday morning. I’m still going to count it as part of bout of books as I could have finished it on Sunday if I didn’t have other things to do.

So here is a wrap up of what I read this week.
50% of These Broken Stars

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

Where There’s Smoke

Fangirl

Say You Will

So I read 5 books during the week and I’m really happy with that. I don’t think I could have read more if I’d tried. It was so good though and I enjoyed this week so much.

Bout of Books ~ Day 5 & 6

So on Day 5 I read a reasonable amount. I got about 40% of Fangirl read. I was really enjoying it and was trying to get to 50% but was far to tired. I decided to stop because I got to that weird reference about Harry Potter. It completely ruined my reading mood because it felt so weird and out of place. Simon Snow is meant to be Harry Potter so why mention Harry Potter as another series of books.

Day 6 was better though as I could put the whole Harry Potter thing behind me and went back to enjoying Fangirl. It is amazing and I loved it so much. I really want to reread it again.
I’ve only just finished Fangirl now but I enjoyed it so much that I’ve decided I don’t want to read The Maze Runner right now. I’m going to read another Romancey sort of book. One I have on my Kobo right now is Say You Will. This is ok as I’m not buying a new book and I’m just reading one I already own. It probably wont be as good as Fangirl though but still better than another Hunger Games styled book.

So I’ve now finished 3.5 books (I was half way though These Broken Stars at the start of the week). I’m really happy with how much I’ve read this week and I’ve really enjoyed it. Hopefully I’ll finish Say you Will tomorrow. *crosses fingers*

On with the challenge of today!
Today you have to spell something out with book titles.
I’m going to do my name.
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
This is here because it has dragons in it and who doesn’t love a book with dragons.
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
I can not wait for this movie and I loved the idea of this series when I read it years ago.
Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
I haven’t read a lot of books that start with M but this one was one I really enjoyed years ago. I enjoyed the movie as well XD
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
After finishing Fangirl I really want to read this too now. I have to wait though before I’m allowed to buy it. Need to read everything I have paid for on my Kobo (or nearly everything).

I’m off to go read some more and maybe con my BF into taking me out for dessert… Yummy

Bout of books – read-a-thon

So long time no see.
I’ve decided I want to try thing blogging thing again. This time I’m going to post about whatever I want not just science.
To start with I’m posting my official sign up to the Bout of books, read-a-thon.
The main reason I am writing this post is I want to try a read-a-thon and this is a good way to keep a record of it.
However, someone might also like to know about it so this is a good way to share it.
This is also a good one because you set your own goals and I’m a really slow reader so this suits me.

Here is a little bit about the read-a-thon:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 18th and runs through Sunday, August 24th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 11 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. – From the Bout of Books team

I haven’t decided on an official number of books yet. I’m thinking maybe 3 in a week.
So I will see you again soon with the official post about goals and the books I’m planning on reading.
Also don’t expect much posts this year. I do have to write a thesis shortly which will be super time consuming.

Science Equity?

Hey Guys!

So this will be a quick post before I head off to RiAus for the day.
I want to talk a bit about Dr Paul Willis’ blog post titled ‘Storytelling for Science.’ In this post he mentions this idea of science equity. Dr Paul Willis said this about science equity:

“Instead we need to look at science equity: the ready access to science for all Australians who want it. And the way to deliver science equity is through science engagement: one-on-one interactions with the audience, pitched at their level and distributed across the continent. That’s the future for science communicators and that’s how I want to tell the stories of science.”

I’m unsure about what Dr Paul Willis means by this. Does he mean that all Australians should be able to read any journal article? Someone would have to pay for that and currently, most Australians would be unhappy if their tax was spent on this. Or should all the scientist out there communicate their science to Australia. If this is the way then how would we achieve this would there be a website that we all post to? Or do we have to hold talks every so often where we present our research to the people who are interested. My last question is how would we enforce this? Or would it just be a natural change that happened and included in everyone’s thoughts on science. If it is the second that would be a very slow change and might not happen at all. You are always going to get some people who don’t like communicating their research or who find it difficult.

I would like to ask Dr Paul Willis what he means by science equity and I think some other students in communicating science are also curious as to what he meant. I also know that science communicator Mike Seyfang also asked a similar question on his blog post ‘Trends for the modern StoryTeller.’ I will post later today if I find the answer and another long post is in the pipelines for today as well.
